For the fifth time now, RWTH Aachen University has received the TOTAL E-QUALITY award.

This recognition is awarded to institutions that implement gender equality in policies and structures at all organizational levels, promoting equal opportunities and supporting the careers of women and men alike. The award is valid for a period of three years. Institutions have the opportunity to reapply for the award; in the process, they must provide evidence that they are making further progress towards achieving equal opportunities.

RWTH won the award for the first time in 2005. Currently, it is one of 64 institutions recognized for their successful equal opportunities initiatives.

Professor Doris Klee, Vice-Rector for Human Resources Management and Development, and Manuela Aye, Head of the Gender and Diversity Management staff unit, have now been presented with the award and the award certificate.

“For many years, RWTH has been dedicated to promoting equal opportunities in science and research, in particular through staff development measures and family-friendly conditions for students and employees. The award honors our continuing progress in gender and diversity management, and especially our diverse and innovative gender equality measures were recognized by the panel of judges.”

Strong points in the University’s application included its equal opportunities strategy as well as its new staff development plan. Furthermore, in 2017, RWTH and the University of Cologne joined forces to formulate joint equal opportunity guidelines, which are also to be adopted by other educational and research institutions in the region.

Additional Distinction for Diversity Measures

In 2017, for the first time, an additional distinction for diversity was awarded by the TOTAL E-QUALITY association, a title that RWTH is now allowed to carry. At RWTH, diversity is defined as a management responsibility to be considered at all levels; the “forumDIVERSITY” steering committee provides support and guidance for all diversity-related initiatives.

In order to protect employees against discrimination, a transparent complaint process has been introduced at RWTH in 2014. Furthermore, a complaint office has been established, which is responsible for both employees and students.
